Akindynos, Gregory
   Monk and theologian who succeeded Barlaam of Calabria (qq.v.) in 1341 as leader of the opposition to Hesychasm (q.v.) and to its chief proponent Gregory Palamas (q.v.). His correspondence is important for understanding the opposition to Hesychasm. He was condemned in 1347, the same year John VI Kantakouzenos (q.v.), who supported the Hesychasts, came to power. Akindynos died in exile the following year.
